April is Autism Acceptance Month. I have to admit April is Autism Acceptance Month.
I have to admit, before Jimmie’s diagnosis, I knew very little about autism.
In my mind, I pictured an anti-social person who was very good at math. Over these past few years I’ve learned so much more about this spectrum and how far off that picture can be.
Jimmie is autistic.
He is neurodivergent.
He is not anti-social. He loves playing with his sister Emily, and has made several close friends at school.
Numbers and letters do not seem to interest him much.
He stems when he’s happy or when he is super focused on his legos or pirate toys.
He’s not mildly or severely autistic. He’s not high functioning or low functioning.
His needs change all the time, just like everyone else.
He is verbal but his speech might not always make since to some.
I’ve learned that No autistic person is the same, just like no neurotypical person is the same. We all have different struggles and needs.
Many autistic people will say that “autism doesn’t make their life hard, it’s the way people TREAT autistic people that can make their life hard.”
So in honor of this month, i encourage you to celebrate differences, learn more about the spectrum, and make an effort to be more inclusive in your everyday lives.
A few of my favorite ways:
•diversify your child’s bookshelf with more books about kids with varying abilities
•instead of dismissing, try educating: when you see a child with ASD flapping her arms or humming repetitively, you could say, “sometimes people do different things when people feel different emotions. It looks like he’s feeling happy. What do you do when you’re happy?”
•treat people the way you want to be treated

Here are some ways to help
(credit: travelbabbo)

1. Donate. There are a lot of legitimate organizations
that are helping. Some good ones: @unicef;
@refugees; @icrc; @doctorswithoutborders;
@rescueorg; @wckitchen.

2. Educate yourself. Putin's attack on Ukraine is the
same as Hitler's attack on Czechoslovakia before
WWII. Understand what can come from silence. Putin
won't stop with Ukraine and Belarus. This will affect
everyone.

3. Post. Post your thoughts. Post ways to help.
Everyone has different followers. Make sure no one out
there believes the Russian media narrative.

4. Support sanctions, including cutting Russia off from
SWIFT. Will Russian citizens suffer? Yes. But people
and governments need to do everything they can to get
Putin out of Ukraine, and cutting off Russia's money
helps.

When the whole family finally smiles for the camer When the whole family finally smiles for the camera…but your faces are blacked out bc the camera is facing the sun 🤷🏻‍♀️🙄.
I know every family struggles with this. There’s usually a screaming toddler, or the annoyed teenager, or the dad who can’t decide between which “blue steel” face he’s gonna go with. 🤦🏻‍♀️
For the past few months, I’ve been asking the kids “What does the mouse eat?” And while it works about half the time, I can tell it’s losing its luster.

What are some of your tips for getting everyone to smile for the camera? Or better yet, a natural happy photo (not necessarily looking at the camera).

Ugh. Throw up everywhere 😩. This week, our who Ugh. Throw up everywhere 😩. This week, our whole fam got hit with a 24 hour stomach bug. First it was Emily, then a day later, Jimmie, and then a day later, Will.
I kept telling myself: “Nope, I’m not gonna get it. Mind over matter. I have too much to do. I am stronger than my kids (including Will). I have no time for this, SO I AM NOT GONNA GET IT! …
…
That didn’t work like I hoped. 🤢

In my stories today, I’m sharing a Room Tour of In my stories today, I’m sharing a Room Tour of the VRBO that we stayed at in St John, along with the link to the unit. You guys had a lot of questions about where to stay and how to book in the Virgin Islands. So here’s my lazy version:
When I’m looking for accommodations, I usually start with Airbnb or VrBO. Next I’ll look at the “HotelsTonight” App, which is great when booking something last minute. Last I’ll research the resorts. I usually don’t prefer resorts unless they have a kids club. There’s pros and cons to Resorts which I’ll touch on another time. But mainly it comes down to avoiding crowds for me. Hope this helps! Happy hunting! #lazylauren

Do you have to be vaccinated or get tested before Do you have to be vaccinated or get tested before visiting St John, USVI?
This was the number one question I received from y’all in our stories.

So here’s the deal:

All domestic travelers 5 years of age or older must submit a negative rapid or PCR Covid test within 3 days of travel…regardless of vaccination status.
You will submit this online through the USVI Travel screening portal to get cleared to travel to the USVI. (The website is www.usvitravelportal.com)
✈️
As for international travelers, test requirements depend on vaccination, mode of travel, and age. Non-U.S. citizens must be fully vaccinated. If you are traveling by air, you must submit a test within 1 day of travel. If traveling by ferry, you may test within 3 days of travel. (Travelers aged 2-17 are exempt from the vaccine requirement).
For us, the process was quick and seamless. Currently there are no requirements to test upon re-entry to the Mainland United States, which was one of the main reasons we decided to change our Christmas plans in England.
Let me know if you have any more questions!
