Best for beginners & Families

Chase Sapphire Preferred
Best for: beginners who want a powerful transferable points card with a low annual fee. Earn 75,000 bonus points after meeting the minimum spend. This is the card most points experts — including myself — recommend as your very first travel rewards card. Chase Ultimate Rewards points transfer 1:1 to over a dozen airline and hotel partners, giving you incredible flexibility to book nearly-free flights and hotels.

Chase Sapphire Reserve
Best for: Frequent travelers who want premium travel perks and lounge access for the family. If you travel several times a year, this card can easily justify its higher annual fee. You’ll earn flexible Chase Ultimate Rewards® points, receive a yearly $300 travel credit, enjoy airport lounge access (plus 2 guests), and get valuable travel protections that can save you hundreds of dollars when trips don’t go as planned.

Capital One Venture Rewards
Best for: Beginners who want simple, flexible rewards. Earn 75,000 bonus miles after spending $4,000 in the first 3 months — worth $750 in travel. This is the card I recommend most to beginners because it’s simple, flexible, and earns 2x miles on every purchase. No complicated category tracking.

American Express Gold Card
Best for: Families who spend heavily on groceries and dining Apply and find out if you’re eligible for as high as 100,000 points after spending $6,000 in eligible purchases in the first 6 months. This card earns 4x points at supermarkets and restaurants — which for most families is where the majority of spending happens. Pair it with a transferable points card and watch your balance grow fast.

Capital One Venture X
Best for: Families who travel frequently and want premium perks. Earn 75,000 bonus miles after spending $4,000 in the first 3 months. The $395 annual fee is practically erased by the $300 annual travel credit and 10,000 bonus miles every account anniversary. Add lounge access on top of that and this card pays for itself. This card sits in my own wallet.

Southwest Rapid Reward Plus
Best for: Families who fly Southwest domestically. Earn 50,000 bonus points after spending $1,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. Lazy Lauren tip: This is the gateway card to earning the Southwest Companion Pass — one of the most valuable benefits in domestic travel.

Citi Strata Premier
Best for: Travelers who want another flexible points program to maximize flight deals. Lazy Lauren tip: Diversifying your points is one of the secrets to finding the best award flights. I love having Citi ThankYou® Points because they give me access to airline transfer partners that Chase, Capital One, and American Express don’t, which means more options when I’m planning nearly-free family vacations

Marriott Bonvoy American Express
Best for: Families who love hotel stays and want automatic elite status and annual free nights. Lazy Lauren tip: I keep this card year after year because the annual Free Night Award alone can often be worth more than the annual fee. It also includes automatic Platinum Elite status, making it one of the fastest ways to unlock room upgrades, late checkout, and complimentary breakfast at many Marriott hotels.
best for business owners & luxury travel

Ink Business Unlimited
Best for: Business owners who want simple unlimited cash back. Earn $1,000 bonus cash back (limited time offer) after spending $8,000 on purchases in the first 4 months from account opening. That $1,000 is actually 100,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points under the hood — which means if you pair this card with a Sapphire card, you can transfer those points to travel partners for significantly more value. No annual fee makes this a no-brainer keeper card.

Ink Business Preferred Card

Lauren’s tip: This is the business card I recommend first to anyone who wants to start flying business class for nearly free.

Capital One Venture X Business
Best for: Business owners who want to earn flexible travel miles on everyday business expenses. Lazy Lauren tip: This is the card I used to book our family’s Emirates Business Class flights home from Greece. I love that it earns at least 2X miles on every purchase, offers miles that transfer to airline and hotel partners, and includes premium travel perks like airport lounge access and an annual travel credit. It’s one of my favorite ways to turn business expenses into unforgettable family vacations
